Program: Photoshop

File Size: 12×12

For this project you will use your cellphone to take a portrait of a classmate or friend.  The image needs to be shot straight on to work best. (similar to the sample image above)  You will use lyric or a quote about 10 words as copy in you design.

The Steps

1. Make a 12×12 300 dpi file in photoshop.  Name it: class_lastname_type

2. Open your portrait and drag the portrait you will use into the 12×12 document and resize it so that it fills the entire page.

3. Make a duplicate of the portrait layer.

4. Using the rulers (control+r) make a 6×12 rectangular selection (m) that covers half of your portrait.

5. We will use this selection to make a clipping mask. Make sure you have the lower portrait layer selected then click on the layer mask button at the bottom of the layers palette (aka Japanese flag)

6. At first it will look like noting happened but if you turn off the other portrait layer,  using the eye icon next to the layer preview, you will see that you image in cut in half.

7. Next we will start to add in our type.  Click on the type tool in the tool bar (T) and use the horizontal type tool.  Click once on the page and begin to type.  Select a chunky and bold font.  This will allow for better readability.

8. Once you have the full type added and organized to cover most of the half of the page you will turn back on the other portrait layer.  Don’t panic when this picture covers up all  you type, its ok!

9. The next step is to add the clipping mask that allows the image to show only in you letters.  But before we do that lets check and make sure that you layers match the order in the above image.

10. We will not add the clipping mask. To do this you will need to right click on the top portrait layer.  Make sure you click on the side with the type and not on the preview image. Scroll  down through the pop up and find create clipping mask.Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 11.23.25 AM

11. depending on you image there may be a few more step to make this more readable.  I used this image for the demo so you could see if there is not enough contrast that some of you words may not be readable enough. Like the above image.    The easiest way to avoid this is to not use an image with a white background.    But here are a few things you could try to correct this result.

You could try resizing the type to make it more readable. like below but that just make a really unbalance layout.Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 11.26.32 AM

12. Filling the background layer with a color is really the easiest solution.  Make sure the color you use works with the image and doesn’t draw too much attention away form what you are trying to communicate. Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 11.28.10 AM
