Notan Project

Notan Inspired Design

  1. Create a design using a 6×6 square of paper.  Make sure your shapes start and stop on the same size. DO NOT not to cross the middle.
  2. Show Mrs. Cox the design before you transfer it to the final paper to make sure the design will work.
  3. Begin to transfer the design to your final paper (12×12).   FIRST trace the 6×6 square in the middle of the page.
  4. Next use a light box to light up your 6×6 sketch with the 6×6 box you just drew on the paper. ( you can also use the window
  5. Now you need to create the same design but reversed on the outside of the square.   This is a little tricky.  You will still trace using a light box with you original sketch under the final paper.  However you will need the original sketch facing down not up.
  6. After flipping over the original sketch (6×6 square) you will line up the corresponding edge on  the outside of the box.
  7. Then when you trace the shapes on the outside of the box.  You should have a mirrored image of the design on the inside of the box.  You only need to trace the design that is on that one edge.
  8. Repeat this step until you have a mirrored design on all 4 edges of you box on you final paper.
  9. Now its time to fill the design in with a black sharpie.  on the inside of the square you will only color in the negative space (the space around the shapes).  For the deisgns that are outside of the sqare you will only color positive space (the shapes)
